What is the green ray?
The green ray or flash is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that occurs shortly after sunset. These green flashes can be seen from any altitude, usually seen when the horizon has no obstacles, such as navigation. The green ray is produced as a consequence of the refraction of sunlight.
The legend in navigation.
The legend says that the green ray can only be seen by those people who are in love, also if two people see the ray at the same time they fall instantly in love with each other. However this is only a legend.
Actually this phenomenon is not really a ray, but it has been named in this way for the duration that it has. The green rays are the product of refraction and the dispersion of light when it is close to the horizon and the illusions generated at that moment.
Sailors are fortunate enough to see this phenomenon more often, since when sailing there are no obstacles on the horizon and it is more likely that this will occur.
Few were aware of this phenomenon until 1882, when Jules Verne wrote his romantic novel called “The green ray”, from this moment fever broke out. In 1954, when it became commercial, the color photograph was that there was evidence that this existed, before this it was thought that they were only an optical illusion.
In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean there is also a reference to this phenomenon, with this small dialogue: “Have you ever seen the green flash, Gibbs?” “Yes, ever. It happens on rare occasions, in the last breath of a sunset, a green ray flashes in the sky. Some spend their entire lives without even seeing it. And some who claim to have seen it have never done it. And some say … some say it is the sign that in soul has returned to this world from the realm of the dead ”
